Zakat: The Pillar of Charity
Giving to Purify Wealth and Help Others
“The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Protect your wealth by giving Zakat, and treat your sick by giving charity, and prepare to face the waves of calamities by supplicating.’”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 5645)
What is Zakat?
Who Benefits from Zakat?
Zakat is a form of obligatory charity that Muslims give to help those in need. It’s a fundamental part of Islam, as it purifies wealth and fosters social support.
Unlike regular charity, which is voluntary, Zakat is a required amount that eligible Muslims must give each year. It’s calculated based on a person’s savings and wealth.
Zakat funds are distributed to specific groups, such as the poor, the needy, and those in debt, to support them and improve their lives.
Muslims who have a certain amount of savings or wealth over a year, known as the Nisab, are required to give Zakat. It applies to adults with enough financial resources.
While Zakat is often given as money, it can also include assets like crops, livestock, and precious metals, depending on what a person owns and their financial situation.
