What is Islam?
Islam means ‘peace’ and ‘connection’ — it’s a way of life that
brings us closer to Allah, our Creator.
It’s about finding purpose, staying
grounded, and living compassionately. Allah tells us in the Quran:
'Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and
the alternation of the night and the day, are signs for those of
understanding.' Quran 3:190
So, start with your heart in the right place, and you’re
already winning!
Being a Muslim entails submitting to the will of Allah and adhering to the teachings of Islam, as revealed in the Qur'an and the Sunnah (the traditions of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him). A Muslim believes in the oneness of Allah, engages in regular acts of worship, upholds moral integrity, and strives to live a life that embodies Islamic principles in all aspects.
Allah is the Arabic term for God, the creator of all that exists. He is unique, having no partners or children, and is all-powerful, all-knowing, and merciful. The attributes of Allah are described throughout the Qur'an, and Muslims believe that He is the same God worshipped by Christians and Jews.
The Qur'an is the holy book of Islam, revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over a period of 23 years. It is considered the literal word of Allah, offering guidance on all aspects of life and the path to salvation. Muslims regard it as the final revelation, succeeding previous scriptures such as the Torah and the Gospel.
Islam teaches that life continues after death, with a Day of Judgement on which all will be held accountable for their deeds. Those who have lived righteously will be rewarded with Paradise, while those who have rejected faith and led sinful lives may face punishment.
Islam places a strong emphasis on moral conduct and character development. Muslims are encouraged to embody virtues like honesty, kindness, humility, and compassion. The teachings of Islam promote being just and fair in dealings with others, helping those in need, and treating all of creation with respect. Good character is considered integral to faith, as exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who said, "The best among you are those who have the best manners and character."
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the ultimate role
model – compassionate, wise, and real. He wasn’t just a teacher; he was a
friend, a family man, and a leader who cared deeply for everyone. The Quran
describes him as:
'And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy
to the worlds.' Quran 21:107
